Squirrels get into attics through gaps where the roof meets the soffit, around vents and at the chimney, often using a branch that hangs over the roof. Once inside, they chew wiring, flatten insulation and raise their young.
The right fix happens in order: check for babies, put a one-way door on the main hole so the squirrels can leave but not return, then seal every gap with metal. Sealing first, or using foam, usually ends with squirrels chewing a new way in, sometimes into the house.
